This story is part of the 2026 Journey to Commencement series, which celebrates the pinnacle of the academic year by highlighting University of Mississippi students and their outstanding academic and personal journeys from college student to college graduate.

For Connor Callahan, the journey to Commencement has been defined by saying yes – to new experiences, new challenges and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

Callahan was 17 when he arrived at the University of Mississippi, more than nine hours from his home in Valdosta, Georgia. He did not know anyone in Oxford, but was determined to make the most of the college experience.

In just a few years, that decision evolved into something much larger: a career built at the intersection of pharmacy, business and leadership.

“My story is kind of unique,” Callahan said. “I went from not knowing anyone to having a network of friends and professionals I truly care about and admire.”

A PharmD and MBA candidate in the , Callahan has taken a deliberate approach to building a career without limits. What began as an interest in math, science and a stable profession quickly expanded into a broader understanding of what a pharmacy degree could offer.

“I realized the true value of a PharmD is the diversity and opportunity,” he said.

Rather than narrowing his focus, Callahan leaned into that flexibility. Throughout his time at Ole Miss, he explored nearly every side of pharmacy – hospital practice, retail, pharmaceutical industry, insurance and research – gaining firsthand experience in how each area contributes to patient care and health care systems.

At the same time, he was building something alongside his clinical training: a foundation in business. Pursuing a Master of Business Administration in tandem with his pharmacy degree, Callahan developed a perspective that extended beyond individual patient care to the systems that shape it: cost, access, operations and long-term impact.

From analyzing drug utilization and cost-effectiveness at to contributing to industry-facing strategy during externships, his work reflects an understanding of health care as both a practice and a system.

That dual focus became a defining part of his journey. While his clinical experiences grounded him in patient care, his business training allowed him to think beyond individual outcomes and toward scalable solutions – how to expand access, improve efficiency and create lasting change.

“From the beginning of Connor’s college experience, his self-motivation and intellectual curiosity led him to pursue both PharmD and MBA degrees simultaneously,” said Eric Pittman, professor of pharmacy administration. “This drive propelled him to explore various careers within pharmacy and ultimately discover the path best suited for him.”

Callahan's leadership experiences reinforced that mindset, particularly through his role as vice president of his fraternity. There, he managed large-scale operations, coordinated events for hundreds of people and developed the ability to lead under pressure, skills that would later translate directly into his professional path.

At times, those worlds overlapped.

“One day in biochemistry, I had to step out multiple times to take calls about a concert we were planning,” Callahan said. “I went from studying molecular interactions to coordinating stage setups.”

Moments like that reflect the balance that defined his college experience, one that combined academics, leadership and real-world execution.

Among his accomplishments, completing both a pharmacy degree and an MBA while managing leadership roles, research and multiple professional experiences stands out the most.

“It was a goal I set early, and I was able to achieve it while doing so many different things,” he said.

Mentorship also played a critical role, connecting him with leaders across pharmacy, managed care and the pharmaceutical industry. Those relationships expanded both his perspective and his opportunities, reinforcing the idea that a pharmacy degree can extend far beyond traditional roles.

After graduation, Callahan will begin a residency with , where he will focus on specialty medications and business operations. The opportunity aligns directly with his long-term goal of owning and operating infusion pharmacy franchises.

At the center of that vision is access. Callahan hopes to expand care for patients in rural communities across the Southeast, ensuring they have access to life-changing medications and the support needed to manage their conditions.

“I want to give them hope that they can live the life they always wanted,” he said.

As he prepares for Commencement, Callahan’s journey reflects more than a collection of experiences. It reflects a mindset shaped by curiosity, leadership and a willingness to explore every opportunity available.
